Wilderness Foundation Africa was established in 1972 by conservation pioneer Dr. Ian Player, who led the team that saved the white rhino from extinction in the 1960s, an action-legacy that Wilderness Foundation Africa continues today, working against wildlife crime and combating the rhino poaching crisis.
Wilderness Foundation Africa works from its base in South Africa to protect wildlife and wilderness in partnership with local communities. Whether it is direct action anti-poaching in the field, large landscape wilderness management, or developing rising young leaders from disadvantaged communities for a career in conservation, Wilderness Foundation Africa has over 40 years of results.
In 2011 the Wilderness Foundation Africa’s Forever Wild Conservation Programme was developed in response to the rhino poaching crisis and has been active through the Rhino Protection Initiative. The initiative primarily focuses on:
-On the ground anti-poaching actions
-Increased security and law enforcement actions
-Increased public awareness
-Demand Reduction for rhino horn in user countries
In 2014 Wilderness Foundation Africa partnered with Vietnamese singer Thanh Bui and developed partnerships with various organizations in Vietnam. In the same year the first Wild Rhino Competition, a part of the Demand Reduction Campaign of rhino horn, was launched with 12 International Schools from Ho Chi Minh City participating. The campaign focuses on developing and implementing a youth awareness and education programme resulting in engagement in reducing the use of and demand for rhino horn in VN.
